We Got Slide 4 Wrong

The first edition of this deck claimed "top chicken" was born 2026-07-29, coined by @dave.9000ish.uk when he named topchicken.bisks.net, with zero pre-2026 attestations anywhere. That's wrong, and @dave.9000ish.uk called it out — quoting a post from @gracekind.net that predates our claimed birthday by eight months.
  • We searched idiom dictionaries, etymology databases, and slang archives. We did not search the one corpus that actually mattered: Bluesky itself.
  • "Top chicken" was already a running bit in @gracekind.net's posts going back to 2025-11-28 — before 2026 even started.
  • This edition corrects the record: the real timeline, the real genesis, and an honest account of how we missed it the first time.

Where We Actually Landed

  • The earliest attestation we can find is 2025-11-28: @gracekind.net posted "What's up top chickens, I heard this platform clucks" — a full eight months before we first claimed the phrase was coined.
  • From there it's a running bit in her posts: a "chicken account" origin story (2026-01-05), then "top chicken" resurfacing repeatedly through mid-2026 as an established piece of slang, not a fresh coinage.
  • Its near relatives — top dog, top banana, pecking order, spring chicken — are real and well documented; "top chicken" is younger than all of them, but not as young as we said.
  • topchicken.bisks.net didn't coin the phrase. It operationalized an existing bit into a literal, running daily leaderboard — which is a genuinely different, and still interesting, thing to have done.

Research Method (Revised)

First pass (wrong)

General idiom dictionaries, etymology databases, chicken-idiom roundups, slang trend coverage, meme archives, general web search. None of these index one person's Bluesky posting history — so none of them could have caught this.

Second pass (this deck)

Lesson: a "corpus" that only covers formal dictionaries and web search will always miss a phrase that's living entirely inside one platform's post history. We went looking for folklore, found a changelog, and should have also checked the group chat.

The Coop Before Us

c. 1921
Pecking order — coined by poultry scientist Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe describing literal hierarchy among hens; borrowed into social/corporate English by the 1950s.
1950s
Playing chicken — a standoff where the first to flinch "chickens out," from the same era as the drag-race game of the same name.
1920s–
Spring chicken ("no spring chicken") — young poultry sells for more; the phrase migrated to mean youthfulness generally.
1930s Bronx
Top banana — burlesque slang for the lead comedian, later "top dog" 's produce-aisle cousin; no attested "top chicken" sibling ever caught on.
1969–70s
The Funky Chicken — a dance craze, unrelated in meaning but proof the genre of "chicken + adjective" phrases has always had room to grow.

The bit sets in — @gracekind.net: "I got audience captured by a single follower quote-posting a reply I made about chickens 15 times. Now I'm a chicken account."

The Tool, Not the Term

The ask

@dave.9000ish.uk asked @buildthis.bisks.net for a site: put in a handle, pull their followers and who they follow, look at every post from the previous UTC day, and surface the single post with the most likes.

The naming

The requester's own words named the result: "This is then the 'top chicken' for that handle." We assumed no prior art because none was cited — but the phrase was already eight months old and running in his network's timelines.

Shipped same day as topchicken.bisks.net. Network cap later raised 250 → 800 accounts (concurrency 8 → 10) once a "relatively small account" turned out to have 700 accounts in its orbit. None of that changes — the build was fine. It's the origin story that needed the rewrite.

How It's Determined

  • Input: one Bluesky handle.
  • Network: that handle's follows ∪ followers, read anonymously from the public AppView.
  • Window: every post from those accounts made the previous UTC day, 00:00:00–23:59:59.
  • Winner: the single post with the most likes. That account is crowned Top Chicken for that handle, that day.
  • Runners-up: everyone else, ranked, under a name that was already sitting right there — the Pecking Order.

What It Means Now — Two Senses

Sense 1 — the original bit

@gracekind.net's usage: a self-deprecating, half-crypto badge for whoever didn't chicken out — held their nerve, called it early, or is simply the OG of a category ("Hal Finney, top chicken 2006"). Community-native, no scoreboard attached.

Sense 2 — the tool's leaderboard

topchicken.bisks.net's usage: a literal, resettable daily title — whoever in your network got the most likes yesterday. Concrete, mechanical, and new as of 2026-07-29.

Both senses are alive in the wild right now. Sense 2 borrowed sense 1's name — that's not a scandal, it's just not the same thing as inventing it.

Risk Register

  • Small-network noise: a network under ~50 posters can crown a winner off a single well-timed post, not sustained excellence.
  • Regression to the mean: today's Top Chicken has no mechanism to defend the title — it's a new draw every UTC midnight.
  • Scope drift: the title is relative to whoever you queried, not absolute; two people can each be "top chicken" the same day for overlapping networks.
  • Citation risk: confirmed in production. A "corpus" limited to dictionaries and web search will miss anything living entirely inside one platform's post history — as this deck itself demonstrated.
